We do not publish health claims. We explain how to read a study so that you can read a claim critically.

Study typeWhat it can showLimits
Laboratory or animal studyA mechanism, in a controlled settingResults often do not carry over to people
Observational studyA pattern in a group of peopleCannot show cause
Randomized controlled trialWhether a treatment changed an outcome versus a comparisonSmall or short trials can mislead
Systematic reviewA summary of many studies, with a methodOnly as good as the studies it includes

Five questions for any claim

  1. Who did the study and who paid for it?
  2. How many people, for how long?
  3. Compared with what?
  4. What exactly was measured?
  5. Has it been repeated by someone else?

Treat press headlines as pointers, not conclusions, and read the abstract at least. Medical decisions belong with a physician.
